Are you aware of your posture?

Last week there was a lot of chat in the studio around posture—why it matters for movement, functionality, and overall health.

I often talk about alignment and posture in Pilates, but it’s not the only time it’s relevant. In strength training, posture and form are key to helping your muscles function and strengthen optimally so your body works as it should during movement.

In the gym we can release, strengthen, and correct muscle imbalances—but awareness is just as important. Think about how you sit when you drive home, how you stand in a queue, how you relax on the sofa, or even how you hold your phone. The way we adapt to our environment often creates imbalance in the neck, shoulders, and back.

And then there’s your breath—something we rarely think about, yet it’s deeply connected to posture and alignment.

Your breathing muscles—especially the diaphragm, ribs, and deep core—play a huge role in how your spine and pelvis are positioned. When breathing is shallow or held high in the chest, the rib cage can become tight and lifted, the shoulders creep up, and the lower back may overarch. Over time, that can throw off the natural alignment of the whole body.

When you learn to breathe well—expanding through the ribs, letting the diaphragm move fully, and engaging your deep core as you exhale—you create better stability and support through your trunk. That foundation improves your posture whether you’re lifting in the gym, sitting at your desk, or simply walking.

Breathwork also calms the nervous system, lowers blood pressure, improves focus and sleep, and changes how we experience stress and pain. Developing awareness of your breath supports both physical alignment and mental wellbeing.

That’s why we’re introducing a new Breathwork class with Kiya, who has practiced traditional Indian breathwork and yoga during her time living in India.

🕖 Starting Monday at 7.15pm, she’ll be guiding you through the basics to help you reconnect with your breath, your posture, and your overall sense of balance.

Come and join her to build awareness—in movement, in stillness, and in yourself.
