You may have seen or heard people talking about NEAT when it comes to exercise and fat loss.
NEAT is Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis.
Which is basically the calories you burn through everyday activities in the form of normal movement as opposed to structured exercise in the gym. Such as - walking, taking the stairs, tidying up, fidgeting, an active job and commuting etc. Activities that you probably don’t think about much.
This type of activity can have a huge impact on your health and fitness whether it is fat loss or weight gain you’re after. It can be the reason you’re not finding the right calorie balance to reach your goals or you think diets don’t work.
You might think 2-3 gym/workout sessions a week is enough but if you have a desk job or just watch tv and veg out on the weekends you are probably going to struggle to reach a calorie deficit if you’re trying to lose fat.
You can track your NEAT through your step count and aim to increase your daily activity, the smart watches have brought a great awareness to this and enables us to track this activity through steps.
Other ways to increase NEAT into your lifestyle can be:
Walking - try to get outside at lunch and increase your steps and get the Vitamin D now the sun has made an appearance!
Park your car further away from work and increase steps that way. Or cycle to work if you can.
Take the stairs instead of lifts or escalators.
Have a work meeting outside walking in person or on the phone. That can also encourage others to be more active in the workplace.
Go on walks at the weekend and enjoy nature.
With the March step challenge taking place this month we are increasing our daily NEAT to increase our movement overall and get closer to our goals 💪🏻
